I have dabbled a bit here and there with social networking and feeds and various article rating systems. I have not always been dazzled by these systems for one reason or another. Sometimes they are too complicated, sometimes the results and participation are either artificial or too inbred to actually be social, sometimes there’s too much politics, sometimes they just aren’t that much help for my interests or my websites.

Be that as it may, these systems do serve some purposes, some serve them very well. One large and sometimes controversial system is Digg.com. Members refer a “good” article to other members on a certain topic for certain key words, other members “Digg” it or vote on it as to its interest, relevancy or quality of content.

This system works a lot of the time from what I can see. There have been some social “ganging” or clique Digging of votes, and there have been a few articles about the resulting problems. But overall, Digg serves its purposes, and it has a lot of members and readers who do not submit articles or Digg on them.

People who submit the articles, and the people who wrote those articles can get a lot of attention if an article gets adequately Dugg to boost it to prominence. This attention may be parlayed into increased traffic for the article, Digg member name recognition, author name recognition, publishing website name recognition and resulting prominence, contracts, sales, etc.

What has the internet got to do with “Britney Spears Edges Paris Hilton in Media War for Pop Tart of the Year 2007.” The answer is - The media. The internet has already beat out magazines and radio for exposure and it will soon be ready to surpass television and newspapers.

The internet is about publicity. Using a website to get publicity as a media form is a constantly growing art form. When you the read the article at the link above you can see how the real professionals handle exposure, publicity, the media.

The internet has it’s drawbacks - you need a computer and a server connection, you need a little computer and internet skill - but once that’s taken care of the internet is large. The internet offers faster variety with a mouseclick than all the cable and satellite remote controls can offer. And all that variety is organized by search engines - especially Google’s trend to customize searches to the individual surfer’s preferences.

How can advertisers and publicity agents use the internet? The answer is many ways. Besides a “search optimized website” there are “forums” and “social networks.” These consortiums amplify your “post”, or “broadcast” if you will. There are online magazines, video feeds, directories - all trying to find the story on your website to tell others about.

Competition? Yes. But that’s where my articles on the internet come in. And that’s where the lessons from Britney Spears and Paris Hilton - that fun flashing duo - come in. Why do they do what they do? Why does the media do what it does? Must be the money, the excitement.

Moral of the Story? Make your message clear, tell it in a powerful way, put it everywhere. If you can do that you really don’t have much competition after all.
