Alexa Affects Your Traffic
08 13th, 2007

Alexa has a powerful way to measure and then affect your traffic. When you view your website’s ranking on Alexa remember that part of that rank is determined by links, traffic, and many other factors. Some of these factors are not generally known except to the most expert Alexa users.

How do other websites compare to yours? Make sure you get the best possible Alexa ranking by getting links that are relevant to your website - it’s of very little value to get links from unrelated sites because Alexa does not count them. Relevant links are helpful to your visitors. Search engines want to know if a site is worth going to. If they believe the site is worthwhile then they are happy to index it to a higher spot.

The differences between a website with modest search traffic and a website with high search results is that the site with the best results is more user-friendly. Alexa Ratings and other valuation systems try guess at how user-friendly a website is by guessing what they think a visitor would like. Once Alexa reaches an estimate of your website’s worth they index it accordingly. This is the main reason it is so important that you have links to your site from other relevant websites. If you exchange links with websites that your visitors find interesting, Alexa likes it very much.

The very best sites to exchange links with have similar and complementary content to your own. For example, if your site is dedicated to orchids and you link to a florist or garden club site you will get some traffic flow. One way to be positive that you link to relevant sites is to link to yourself from other websites that you own. You can save time and effort in finding as many other relevant websites. But remember traffic flow is the major factor because Alexa checks traffic flow.

After comparing your site to the others that you link to, Alexa will assign your website a ranking number. The lower that the ranking number is the better is traffic you are receiving. Yahoo!’s homepage ranks number 1 and Google’s ranks number 3 for example - these are huge traffic sites.

Many search results utilize Alexa Rankings in their indexing, so if you have a good Alexa Rank you get good traffic and will get even more traffic. If you want to see your Alexa rating, all you need to do is go to alexa.com and enter your domain name.

You can also download the Alexa toolbar, which lets you see how much traffic any site that you are visiting has. If the site you want to link with has no traffic then a link exchange won’t be worth the trouble. It could have an adverse effect on your Google Pagerank which is at least as important your Alexa Valuation.

alexa.jpg

Using the Alexa ranking allows you to compare the traffic of your site, or any website with the traffic of the web as a whole. Number 1 is the top rank. If your website gets a 1,409,362 ranking number it means that approximately 1,409,362 websites get more traffic than you do.

Remember that a high Google PageRank will also increase your traffic. If you have a good Google PageRank and a low Alexa Rating, your site is apparently new to the internet. It will take some time to get traffic up.

Generally, the Alexa Rating is the second number that SEO experts will look at. The Alexa Rating is really more for comparison of your website to others. But also remember that Alexa rating is an estimate based on the number of visitors at your site who utilize the Alexa toolbar - so these ratings can be a little large or small. That is the current situation with
Alexa.

Uncle Arthur’s Fatal Eighteen Web Design Problems
08 8th, 2007

The worst mistakes of any design for a webpage are many but this list of mistakes shows you the real fatalities. Any one of these can hurt or finish your website with visitors or customers - so proceed with caution dear reader as we look into the crypts of certain webpage death.

1- Nasty Color Schemes - Some pages irritate the viewer’s eyeballs and they simply have to move on, leaving you to twist, alone in your agony.

2- Spelling & Grammar Problems - If you want to spell out A-M-A-T-E-U-R to your viewers don’t check the spelling and grammar.

3- Poor Font Style and Size - Go ahead, just leave it dorky, nice big goofy website right? Rigghhhht!

4- Freakout Music - Feeling dramatic are we??? Well, if you take it out on your visitors’ eardrums guess who’s drama turns into a tragedy?

5- Didn’t Test the Website - Didn’t want to see how your website looks in all the browsers? This is a very strong hint from Uncle Arthur now!

6- Ugly Layout and Design - Just cause you like to look at fecal waste films doesn’t mean any of your visitors would enjoy that particular motif. Have just a little good taste here!

7- Non-Standard Links - So you like to jazz everything up and keep people guessing? Different types and colors for your links? Wheeeeeee! Holiday for airheads.

8- Stupid Navigation - Yeeaaah! Moving targets and trailing crap! Unlabelled floating objects with no links mixed with other floating objects with hidden navigation links! What sport!

9- Slow Loading Pages - Better design a super interesting load meter, right? So people can watch you load that mammoth onto their computer? It’s like watching the Titanic - and your sinking.

10- Stupid Texts - Didn’t put your words in the right order? - “Content is King.” Some visitors and spiders are really stupid too. Huh?

11- No New Content - If there is no new content then the visitors and search engines no longer need to visit your website (Hint, Hint)

12- Too Many Clicks - What if your visitors don’t like to click on page after page to get to what they are looking for? Well, that’s just real tough stuff for them isn’t it?

13- Hidden Contact Information - Playing hard to get? Yes, you’re special, very special, in a fatal kind of way.

14- Bad Hosting Services - Well, some people like hard to remember URLs and cheap looking webistes.

15- Loads of Ads - Keeping a forest of ads looks very professional, doesn’t it? It lets the visitor know you can’t make any money with your ads and that your website can’t just provide information or a service.

16- Poor Images - Don’t mind if visitors see your ugly pictures? Leave ‘em different sizes, poor quality, badly cropped, too small or too large file size, etc.

17- Website Best Viewed At - Don’t advertise that you are a beginner.

18- No Prices - If you sell something do not expect visitors to waste their time sending email inquiries on your prices. Include a price with the item description.

If you will just pay attention to Uncle Arthur when he talks you won’t make those fatal mistakes.

Hosting Your Ecommerce Website
08 6th, 2007

Ecommerce is a very hot sector of the economy and the internet. If you do ecommerce - or want to - remember that you will need to have a website that is very functional and very dependable - 24/7. Your ecommerce webhost plays a big role in your success, so pick a host that can support ecommerce well.

Ecommerce hosting packages need to support very powerful websites. This allows you to make a dependable and responsive sales engine.

Here are some important features:

The Planning Phase - Ecommerce websites need much more planning than a regular business web site. You need the detailed plan for both now and the future - so that your choice of hosting services can grow with your site. Try to anticipate the addition of new features as you have a need for them. Your webhost must provide very dependable support services. You will have to have a database to store all the info about the products and customer information of your business. Make sure your host can show you a demo model or some of their clients’ ecommerce websites in operation so that you can study their function.

The Shopping Cart- The virtual shopping cart should be provided by any ecommerce website. This allows a buyer to select one or more products before going to the checkout for purchase. The program should have cookies so that the ecommerce site remembers each customer and each item in their shopping cart. Your ecommerce hosting plan should support the shopping cart programs, or at least the one you will use.

The Payment Gateway- Ecommerce necessitates provision of a payment gateway so customers will purchase goods from your site with Visa, MC, MoneyBookers.com, PayPal.com , check, or even by telephone. Your host must support this kind of functioning - so check to make sure all features are compatible and supported by the host.

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) - To accept payment online you need an SSL. SSL provides security by encrypting all payment data. This includes credit card numbers, addresses, and personal info so that it cannot be read by computers as the transaction passes through. Without any SSL all personal and financial info would be visible to anyone accessing the computers. Ideally, your hosting provider should guarantee near 100% uptime. The worst situation involves your visitors and established customers unable to bring up your website. The easiest way to find out about a host’s reputation is to communicate with their webmaster clients about the host’s dependability.

To Serve and Protect,
Arthur Browning

Uncle Arthur: Why Must I Tell You - NO NO!?
08 2nd, 2007

There are lots of lists of to-dos nowadays but Uncle Arthur is going to lay one more list on you now. Don’t be stubborn, it’s for your own good - not mine. Just read read it, maybe in five or six times, it will soak in. I don’t want your webpage to look stupid, so I’m passing on some tips from my great wisdom. You can read this now, or I can say “I told you so, stupid” later.

1) NO frames (I know you’ve heard it all before)
2) NO Cheesy Hit counters (Are you still playing Pong?)
3) NO Orphan Pages (What’s the point in that?)
4) NO Stupid Kiddie Decorations (What, still in kindergarten?)
5) NO Pop Ups (Want people to think you’re suicidal?)
6) NO Dumb Fancy Fonts (Keep it grownup okay?)
7) NO Overkill with Flash (’Member Why?)
8) NO Javascript links (I know you’re tired, read!)
9) NO Blinking texts (It’s not Circus Day for the Noobs!)
10) NO Missing Meta Tags (Don’t come crying to me)
11) NO Horizontal Scrolls (Use just a little of that brain!)
12) NO Underlining or coloring normal text.
13) NO forgetting functional links on your footer.
14) NO forgetting Marketing Strategies (Dog ate your homework?)
15) NO forgetting anchor text on your links.(Earth, calling YOU!)
16) NO subscribing a visitor without consent.(Little sociopath)
17) NO home page title like “Welcome to MySite” (Duu-uuh?!?)
18) NO using “Bells And Whistles” (Make your visitors vomit?)

Uncle Arthur doesn’t like to have to tell you over and over but that’s why he gets frustrated with you. So whether you have created your own website or are working with someone else on your website, let’s hope all these NO NOs will help you create a better website instead of driving those visitors away.
