Evaluating Your Own Website - Part 1
05 14th, 2007

You have spent of time and money into your website. Whatever the purpose of the website is you want to get the best possible results from it. The question is how do you know your website will succeed.

Ask yourself why you even have the website. Are you trying to make a business selling a product or providing information? What should happen when a visitor lands on your page?   You are the one who ought to have the site
set up to direct people to their destination. If you don’t know what that is, then all is lost.

Visitors know why they visited your site. You should know why they came so that you can help them. If your website does not quickly provide what they want they will leave to go to another one. Just because you get all the traffic you could hope for does not mean that your site will succeed.

There are several ways to measure your success. One is your Conversion rate. The conversion rate is the ratio of visitors to buyers. If you are not selling it is the rate at which your visitors do whatever you want them to do. It could be to sign up for your newsletter or anything else. If you get one hundred visitors per day and you convert three then your conversion rate is three percent.

This is a good measure of the quality of your website. If your site is not converting, you know that you need to make changes to the site. However, it could also mean that your marketing or advertising campaign is sending untargeted traffic to your site. In other words sending visitors who are not interested in what you have to offer.

Use A Web Template to Make Your Websites - Part 2
05 8th, 2007

A ready-made webpage template gets what you need to get your website up and running with minimal cost - but great looks. Webpage templates can be easily customized.  A novice or an expert professional can use a web template to immediately make a website exclusively unique.

The files that you get when you buy a web template can vary according to what company you buy from and which available features are for a given type of template. Whichever sort of template you choose to buy there are certain files you must receive with your purchase: Index.html file, jpeg/gif image files, font files, External CSS Style sheets, and PSD files. - You might also receive .js file (for templates that use JavaScript) and readme.txt files. Usually these files are sent to you in a .zip format. You can unzip them to use them - you can get unzipping software like WinZip dowmloaded from winzip.com website.

There are two major types of templates: exclusive - which are copyrighted templates and nonexclusive - which are non-copyrighted templates. The exclusive template gives you ownership but the nonexclusive template does not.  Exclusive webpage templates cost more but they are not sold to any other designer. A nonexclusive template is cheaper but gives you only the right to use the template. So you can modify the template however you want but no resale to a third party. Non-exclusive templates can be resold by the template provider to more than one customer.

Editting your web template involves putting content into the webpage, changing areas of the style and changing graphic elements. This is done by using files provided with your purchase: psd and index.html for example.

To edit images and graphics you will require the PSD files. You can change image color; add/remove image layers etc. PSD files are those created using Photoshop and can be edited by Photoshop or other image editing software.

If you only want to change or add the content of the template, you just go to edit the index.html file. The index.html file is provided for any webpage templates by the seller and it can be edited with any html editor - Dreamweaver or Frontpage. You may also edit content using text editors. Index.html can also be used for replacing the images or changing links as well as adding meta-tags, alt texts, title and changing the image sources.

For editing your layout and styles you will need a CSS style sheet. The CSS style sheet is a document that lets you make changes like text color, paragraph spacing, headings, links, etc. to all the pages at one time. Be sure to ask the web template seller to give you the external CSS style sheets to make it very easy to do editing. The CSS style sheet can be edited using any of the HTML or text editors. You can use the web template customization services that are provided by most template providers if you are having difficulty.

Use A Web Template to Make Your Websites - Part 1
05 7th, 2007

Design of a professional website will take time, effort and know-how. Coding, loading time, attractiveness, linking, visitor-friendly operation are all necessary - to name just a few important factors. There are many other things that must be learned .

Several key factors that make or break a professional website need to be addressed.  Hiring a website designer is the option most people opt for. Web designers can do terrific work - but what about the time factor - and the costs? This is what makes web templates are important.

What are web templates? In simple terms, web templates are semi-finished, pre-designed web pages that can be used to create and host websites in much
less time. They have all the coding for graphics and logos you need and they can be customized if you want to add new pictures or content.

Why are webpage templates considered semi-completed WebPages? Web templates are semi-finished because they are not ready to upload as they are. You will need to add some elements to complete them. Some of the main elements that you need to add include:

Links, Page Content, Page Titles/header/footer and meta tags, Company Logo, images, etc. After you add these details the web template is ready to be uploaded to your web host for the world to see.

What is the cost of web templates? Web templates range in price depending on the type of templates, package deals, membership deals, files provided.

Typically a professional template with non-exclusive rights could cost you from $20 to $100. This is much lower in cost compared to a web designer’s fee, not to mention the time factor. Copyrighted templates with exclusive rights could cost from $350 to $1800 per template. Some template providers can offer you high quality templates for much lower costs.

Yes! You Can Do It!!!

Content - How to Get Something Out of It!
05 3rd, 2007

Content is being honored more and more by the Google Search Engine algorithm as well as other search engines. Content, both quality and quantity, is a major factor in the SERPs, which drives your traffic. Here’s my question. How good is your content- actually?

Your content can appeal to Google’s spiders or it can appeal to your readers, or it can do both. If it appeals to the spider you will get clicks, but if it appeals to the reader you will get revisits. This of course depends on what kind of content you are generating and for what purposes and for what markets it is intended.

No matter how good your content is it can be imitated and or quoted in other articles that essentially ride on your research, genius and/or eloquence in various ways. At least if your article is cited in other articles or quoted you should get a link, and as Leonardo Di Caprio said in “The Departed,” you will at least get that “out of it.”

The flattery of this back-handed recognition, as with imitation or outright stealing, is not enough however if you don’t get a link “out of it.” So is this a problem for you? It kind of takes some of the initiative out of your research, genius and/or eloquence in various ways.

Is this a problem for Google? To some extent it is. It’s algorithm takes into account your new content but not really your research, genius and/or eloquence. It cannot react equitably to stealing at times, and seldom to imitation. What can you do about it? As Jack Nicholson said in “Hoffa,” “I’m gonna do what I gotta do.”
